When I was a little kid I was deeply concerned about pollution and one of my first T.V. memories was of the Native American man floating down a river brimming with garbage and a silent tear rolled down his cheek. I started my first environmental group when I was about 12: Cup and Cats (Clean Up Pollution, Clean America Together System.) I wrote letters to Burger King, MacDonalds and local coffee shops begging them to stop using styrofoam cups, whose production released CFCs into the air, destroying the ozone. Today, I just help teach science to 7th and 8th grade students at a charter school. We teach a whole unit on global climate change that ends with a Forum on Climate change. This year the students organized themselves into a Middle School Green Team and are working hard to encourage the entire school community to reduce their carbon footprint. We can solve global environmental issues, but it requires education and energy. With every student I educate, I hope I add boundless energy to finding the solution.
