Mercury Levels Rising

For almost two years, we've been gathering hair samples from Greenpeace supporters across the country. On February 8, we released the results of our nationwide mercury study, and the results are alarming. Over one in five women of childbearing age tested above the limit the Environmental Protection Agency set as safe.

The even more chilling news is that earlier this year in his State of the Union speech to Congress, President Bush called for more energy investment in dirty fossil fuels, including coal, the largest source of mercury pollution in the country.

Tell Congress that America doesn't need more coal and mercury to be spewed into our environment, our waterways and our bodies. A healthy, sustainable energy futures begins with increased investments in clean, renewable energy, not dirty fossil fuels.

Dear Senators, Representative,

I am writing to urge you to reject the president’s State of the Union pledge for more investment in coal. Coal destroys our land, fouls our air and water and emits more mercury pollution than any other U.S. source.

On Feb 8, the University of North Carolina-Asheville released a new study about mercury exposure in the U.S. population. Testing people’s hair from around the country, researchers found an alarming rate (one in five) of women who tested for mercury above levels that the EPA considers safe for women who are or may become pregnant. Exposure to mercury can lead to the inability to focus and pay attention, delayed language development, impaired memory, vision and motor coordination and problems processing information

Clean energy investment in solar, geothermal and wind power projects will create good jobs for America, improve our health by taking pollution such as mercury out of our environment and reduce global warming pollution.

When you invest in our energy future, please invest in true renewable energy, not more fossil fuels.
