Tell Bush to Fully Protect Polar Bears from Global Warming

Global warming is melting the Arctic sea ice at an alarming rate, taking with it the vital habitat of polar bears and other wildlife. The last two years were the worst ever recorded for sea ice loss. If current trends continue, the Arctic will be ice free in summer by 2040, depriving polar bears of the hunting and denning grounds they need to survive. In response to a successful lawsuit by Greenpeace and others, the Bush Administration decided last December to recommend polar bears for protection under the Endangered Species Act. Yet the Administration also signaled it would do nothing to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that drive global warming. Without such reductions, global warming will continue and the polar bear - and many other species - will disappear.

The Bush Administration has asked for public input on whether and how to protect the polar bear under the Endangered Species Act. Let them know you support the polar bear, and demand the curbs on greenhouse gas emissions necessary to ensure its survival.

Dear U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recently requested public comment regarding its proposal to protect the polar bear as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.  As a member of the public deeply concerned about the growing impacts of global warming on our environment, I am writing to express my strong support for that proposal.

The polar bear is a majestic and remarkable predator uniquely adapted to life in the Arctic, spending most of its life hunting, traveling and even denning on the frozen sea ice of the Arctic Ocean.  It�s ability to survive in these harsh conditions have made the polar bear an icon of the northern wilderness.  Yet these same adaptations make the species extremely vulnerable to the loss of sea ice due to global warming.  In the last three decades, rising temperatures have caused the Arctic ice to vanish at an alarming rate, reducing the polar bear�s access to critical food supplies and denning sites.  In 2005 and 2006, the sea ice retreated farther and faster than ever before. If recent trends continue, summer sea ice could disappear completely by the year 2040, taking with it the habitat critical to the polar bear�s survival, and to the survival of many other species.

To prevent the polar bear from becoming extinct, immediate action is needed to stop the global warming that is destroying its only habitat.  For this reason, I urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to immediately list the polar bear as threatened or endangered and take every possible action to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that put this species, and many others, at imminent risk of extinction.
