Total Letters sent globally: 252,179 Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki are charged with stealing a box of whale meat which they presented as evidence of a whale meat smuggling operation. The activists requested a Japanese government investigation into the scandal, and the Tokyo public prosecutor agreed there was sufficient evidence of wrongdoing. His investigation has now concluded. The only persons charged are the Greenpeace activists who presented the evidence. Our activists are innocent of any crime. They have been arrested for returning whale meat that was stolen from Japanese taxpayers, and exposing a fraud that may reach high into the Japanese government agencies that run the whaling program. Please write to the Japanese Prime Minister and Foreign Minister and demand they pursue the real criminals, not these peaceful activists.
Dear Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura, Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, I am writing to protest, in the strongest terms, the charges you have brought against Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki for exposing a whale meat smuggling ring. These activists have cooperated fully with the authorities since their arrest on June 20th and have made it clear that they are willing to accept the consequences of their actions to expose the scandal of the theft of whale meat from Japanese taxpayers. The response by the authorities in Japan is clearly politically motivated in order to silence those opposed to the Government-sponsored whaling program. However, it simply serves to draw more attention to the allegations made by Greenpeace. It is an essential principle of democracy that those who act to expose wrongdoing in government should not be subject to intimidation or harassment, no matter how powerful the forces they oppose. Please, I urge you to pursue the real criminals and not these peaceful activists.
"Sincerely," and your name and contact information will be added to the end of the letter.
