We are 5th grade students from Mark Twain Elementary School working on exhibition. (Which is a project were we pick a topic and take action) Our topic is how businesses/organizations motivated by economic factors can cause habitat loss. Our name is The Tree Huggers it was picked in our class and by our team. We are focused on how the Kimberly-Clark company is cutting down trees to make their products and how this can cause habitat loss. We are taking action by sending a letter to Mrs.Dauber(The principal of our school) asking her for permission to go from class-to-class to talk to each classroom and tell them about what the Kimberly-Clark company is doing. in that presentation we compared the price of Kleenex tissues to the price of Seventh Generation and we figured out that Seventh Generation is about 20 cents more than Kleenex. We also sent a letter to the PTO (the Parent Teacher Organization) to ask them if they could use Seventh Generation instead of Kleenex in the school supplies. They said that they would try to but they cant right now because they already ordered the Kleenex. Seventh Generation is good to use since its 100% recycled paper and environmentally safe to use. Also its not chlorine bleached, Kleenex is just the oppposite. Its chlorine bleached and has little or no recycled content. In the chlorine bleaching process incredibly toxic by-products are created which can wash off into our water and soils. When companies like the Kimberly-Clark company cut down huge amounts of trees, carbon dioxide is released. Also since trees are the only living thing that can take in carbon dioxide and create oxygen there will be less oxygen which is essential for us to breathe. If there are less trees that means there is less oxygen to breathe and we might not survive. This causes Global Warming and that causes more and more problems. The 5th Grade Tree Huggers
