Now that's what I call frustrating
Recently a few students at my school, myself included, succeeding in pressuring the administration into having recycling bins being placed around the school. This was a huge achievement considering we had never before had bins for plastic, aluminum, and other material.
However today while I was re-filling my water bottle, I was infuriated to see about a dozen water bottles in the garbage can. This itself is annoying, but the real kicker? The garbage can is RIGHT NEXT TO A RECYCLING BIN!
I've never been met with such a challenge as to change a mind.
"Things do not change; we change."
- Henry David Thoreau
(Wow, two Thoreau quotes in a row!)

earthworshiper on October 16, 2007 I know what you mean. My friends and I had started a recycling program at our school, and nobody paid attention to the bins. So we handed out flyers....still nothing! But pretty soon after speaking on the P.A. System and all that, we finally got people to wake up and smell the coffee! Good luck with your own recycling program.

britbar86 on October 18, 2007 We are doing recyclemania at our school and we really got positive feedback when we set up a competition to see what dorms can recycle more. We rewarded the winning dorms (by floor) with pizza parties. I am not sure if you have any environmental groups at your school, but maybe they could fund the prizes if you do. Also, check out the recyclemania website. I think that recyclemania is only for colleges and universities, but the site should have some good ideas to get people motivated. Best of luck to you, and good job at getting the bins there in the first place. I know that isn't always an easy task in some schools.

About Me

Student at O'Gorman High School
Sioux Falls, SD USA
Living in the Midwest places me in an interesting vantage point regarding environmentalism, alternative lifestyles, and global politics. My name is Joe Klein. I was born in St. Paul, MN, on November 19, 1990, but was raised in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I'm currently a junior in high school. I've been a photographer for approximately 2 years, a graphic designer for 5, and a creative freak since I could draw on walls. I'm a vegetarian, politically non-partisan, and have a deep passion for art, music, philosophy, literature, nature, and health, among other things. At school I'm involved in band, drama, and journalism. By South Dakotan terms, I've been called activist, hippie, liberal (yes, actually intended as a derogatory term), and numerous other things, largely due to my intense fervor for environmentalism, pacifism, and healthy lifestyles. I enjoy reading, coffee (black please), conversations, recycling, and friendly debate. Pet peeves include apathy, being told I don't get enough protein, and girls who act less intelligent than they really in order to impress the opposite sex.
