Intervention on Kleenex Ad Campaign
Hey folks,
We had a lot of fun here in NYC last weekend, at Kimberly Clark's expense I'm afraid. K-C was in Times Square, shooting interviews of passersby for their "Let It Out" Kleenex ad campaign. "Brand ambassadors" stop folks off the street and tell them "don't hold anything back", "let it out" and tell Kleenex about something that upsets you. And so we did!
We sent three undercover Greenpeace activists in with hidden mics to infiltrate their interviews and talk about what really makes us cry: wiping out old-growth forests for disposable tissue products. While our third activist actor was sitting on the Kleenex couch, talking to the therapist/actor, folks in Kleercut t-shirts appeared out of nowhere and held a "Kleercuts" banner up behind the couch.
The Kleenex team was caught completely off guard. They stopped the film shoot and for the rest of the day we flyered passersby, effectively shutting down a multi-million dollar ad campaign. K-C execs in town for a paper conference stopped by to observe, looking none too pleased in their suits and their scowls.
Very kind of Kleenex to go to such lengths to set the stage for our own campaign commercial. Our action was planned in less than 2 days, and it went off without a hitch. Big ups to the NYC Frontline canvass team, Kleercut campaigner Lindsey, and everyone involved for some short-notice sleuthing, scheming, and forest defending!
Love,
Beka
PS...we have a Kleenex camera-person giving us an interview on camera, saying "Gotta hand it to Greenpeace, this was pretty brilliant!"
