Warming Oceans: Bad

This is important stuff. The Pacific Ocean ecosystem is showing signs of the ill-effects of climate change.

It seems that the normal upwelling that should be occurring in the Pacific along the North American coast is not happening.

Canadian scientists have found that waters off British Columbia at their historical warmest.

Glenn Martin writes about the effects this is having in his article Sea Life in Peril the San Francisco Chronicle.

"Oceanic plankton have largely disappeared from the waters off Northern California, Oregon and Washington, mystifying scientists, stressing fisheries and causing widespread seabird mortality."

Plankton form the basis for the entire oceanic food chain. A collapse of plankton populations will have devastating effects throughout the ecosystem.

"Something big is going on out there," said Julia Parrish, an associate professor in the School of Aquatic Fisheries and Sciences at the University of Washington in an AP story on Wired.com

One thing us Americans can do is sign the Peoples Ratification of the Kyoto treaty. It will signal to the world and to our leaders your willingness to make the changes necessary to reverse the Climate Change trends we have seen.

AP reports that Greenpeace to impact Potter sales

The big hype has peaked with the release of the latest Harry Potter just after midnight today.

The Associated Press is reporting that Greenpeace will help shift sales to Canada through its web campaign.

If you are plannning on buying the book, do it through Amazon.ca or some other Canadian outlet.

And don't forget to take part in the Action Alert to let Scholastic (the US publisher) know that they should be using recycled paper in their books.
