Greenpeace stages rally outside EPA's Endangerment Hearing

| More
mikeg Yesterday Greenpeace held a rally in Virginia outside of the first of two EPA Endangerment Hearings that will take place this week. These hearings come about a month after the EPA announced its conclusion that greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels endanger human health and welfare –  which by law gives the EPA the right to regulate those emissions under the Clean Air Act. The EPA's endangerment finding is a good sign that the Obama Administration might be willing to regulate greenhouse gases should Congress fail to act. The Greenpeace activists outside the EPA's Endangerment Hearing in VirginiaAdministration is holding these public hearings through June as part of the public input process.

We showed up to yesterday’s hearing with banners reading, "The Science is Clear,” “Rescue the Climate,” and stood outside the hearing facility for all to see. From blocks away volunteers could be heard chanting: "EPA: today is the date. Rescue the Climate before it's too late!" We got honks from cars passing by and waves and shouts from supporters on foot. It was clear we didn't go unnoticed.

A young activist outside the EPA Endangerment Hearing in VirginiaWith the same industry lobbyists inside the hearing as have been inside Congressional offices this spring, it's more important than ever that we are representing the movement and always reminding the media, the public, and elected officials that there is a human face to the impacts of climate change.

The next hearing is in Seattle on Thursday. We’ll be there too. Check back for an update!

This administration promised for a change. It would be better for them to start changing the climate we have right now to save people with the future damage that would be an effect of global warming. It is really bias to just give proper support with this Big 3 companies. Well it is not reasonable for the government to be bias because everybody are hungering for financial help that they gave just for car industry. With Chrysler Motors filing for bankruptcy, it seems that a few Chrysler dealerships closing would follow. There will be 789 Chrysler dealerships closing their doors soon, as the company restructures in bankruptcy and reaches a deal with Italian car company Fiat. The company received over $4 billion in installment loans to keep them afloat, yet it wasn't quite enough, so the company has filed for bankruptcy protection. General Motors is predicted to follow their lead. GM has already begun closing dealerships. Industry experts have predicted GM's bankruptcy filing for months, and now it seems all but inevitable.

Hi,

I worked as a contractor for the EPA and State Water Resources Control Board for over 7 years, and I have found that implementing regulations can be a slow, political process. I think, overall, it would be best if Greenpeace put more emphasis on Congress revising the ACES ACt, so that is implements the emission reductions originally proposed by the scientists.

Even Lisa Jackson states that regulating greenhouse gases, could be slow (This is from an interview on Time magazine: http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1893155,00.html)

"The Administration and Congress have to juggle a lot of priorities right now. What happens if Congress drags its feet on cap and trade and we don't see it passed in the near future? Is there any way regulation could step in if greenhouse gases really are a direct threat to public health and welfare?

You rightly point out that the findings obligate the EPA to regulate those pollutants. It is right to say that regulation is not off the table. The only way to take regulation off the table is with legislation that addresses greenhouse gases. And despite the characterization elsewhere, we are not looking to regulate wildly. I do think that you can regulate in a thoughtful fashion. But I would also be willing to bet that those regulations, when proposed, would be subject to all manner of lawsuits."

So long as nations and corporations, with their laws and use of force and profit lusting exist, there will never be a heaven upon the earth. Saving the earth means abolishing these artificial constructs, as if all people were born, like the children, according to Jesus Christ, innocent "such as these," fit to enter the kingdom of heaven. As Thoreau said, people are forever enemies of any beneficial social change, reform, or improvement. Being another's master is so much fun, and overthrowing the master, from the slave's point of view, is scary and requires such taxing hard work. And the only command Christ proclaimed needed to be followed was "Love one another." Gee that would take a lot of effort.

Actually...the event in Seattle already happened and it was a HUGE success! Not sure why that wasn't in the original update. Following last Thursday's rally here in Seattle, there is a 60 day public comment period during which WE (the people) can voice our opinions and concerns regarding the pending decision. I urge EVERYONE to call, write, email, petition, etc!!! We can do this, we can make a difference, we can initiate an era of environmental consciousness; but it has to start with you!!!!! USE YOUR VOICES, THEY ARE POWERFUL!
