Marquette is ready to tell the world that we are working to send the US back to Kyoto negotiations.  Marquette is one of more than two hundred communities making steps ahead of the federal government in endorsing the Kyoto Protocol and passing energy efficiency goals. 

This Saturday on Northern Michigan University Campus concerned citizens are gathering to hear from Greenpeace expedition leader Eric Larsen who made the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole this year.

62 days of pulling and paddling 225-pound modified canoe-sleds over 550 statute miles of shifting sea ice, open ocean, pressure ridges, whiteouts and blizzards, achieved what many thought would be impossible: the first ever summer expedition to the North Pole.

“We, the One World Expedition, stand here at the North Pole to bear witness to the dramatic effects of global warming and the plight of the polar bear.

After the visual presentation we will head out to take an aerial photo.  The photo will be broadcast around the world to show that people in Michigan are ready to stop global warming.

This week has been full of inspirations!   After presentations at the Lions club, Rotary and several screenings of An Inconvenient Truth the city is jumping into action. Already they have become a tree city with an effective shade tree commission. This summer the city council approved a program for an idle free Charlevoix.  These are the small steps that together make big changes possible. 

    Building on these great initiatives is a new committee just approved by the city council to make recommendations for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.  In addition the city council is sending a letter to Congressman Stupak encouraging him to make global warming solutions a priority.  Way to go Charlevoix!!! 

Coming up this weekend is the Bioneers conference in Traverse City. Next Monday the First Congregational Church is hosting a screening of "An Inconvenient Truth" at the City Hall in Charlevoix.

A very warm welcome to all of our new activists from Menominee to Charlevoix, Cheboygan to Marquette.  People across Northern Michigan are speaking out to show the world that we are ready to stop global warming!

November 4 is the international day of action to recognize the next phase of Kyoto.  People  around the world will be gathering to encourage leaders to join the international treaty to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The United States and Australia are the two major stackholders still holding out.

We will be encouraging people across the district to organize gatherings to show their solidarity.  Students in Marquette are planning an event at the lower harbor in downtown. 

Take a moment to call your Congressman and suggest they too join in the Nov. 4 day of action! 

This week the pressure heats up on the Congress to commit to global warming solutions. 

Faith leaders from across the country have joined together to mobilize a religious response to global warming.  October First through Eight in halls of worship across the nation congregations are participating in an inter-religous screening of An Inconvenient Truth and discussion on global warming.

There are several congregations in our area participating! The question is... If George Bush talks to God and we talk to God will George listen?
