In response to: Steve Jobs greener Apple update

In 2007, we achieved a recycling rate of 18.4%, which blew away our target of 13%. Our goal for 2010 was 28%, and we'll beat that in 2008-two years ahead of schedule.

I'm proud to report that all of Apple's new product designs are on track to meet our 2008 year-end goal(to eliminate PVC and BFRs).

Totally agree with this statement "Now what we’d really like for Christmas is to see Apple remove toxic chemicals from all it’s products, and announce a free, global recycling scheme. That would make a very tasty green Apple" and have to say that Apple do seem to try and this hopefully is putting the pressure on the others.

I've seen a documentary about a family that bought an old house, tear it down and started rebuilding using only nature-friendly materials. They wanted a Green house so to say, using sun panels for energy, reducing waisting to a minimum. They were mad at the end because their perfect house needed washer parts that would waist a lot of water.

Agreed, Renee. I read the below on Treehugger today and he makes a very good point too! At least Steve is heading in the right direction, but come one, put a little more effort into it!

"Enough, Already. ‘Recyclable’ is Not Recycling
by Warren McLaren, Sydney on 01.24.08
Design & Architecture (recycled)

Mostly this writer steers away from the negative aspect of a story because there are plenty of others already on that bandwagon. But some things just annoy me to the point of distraction. A case in point being companies selling products by proclaiming their materials are easily recyclable. Especially when their own product does not include any of these very same materials.

To my mind this is hypocrisy. It is “do as I say, not do as I do.” Recycling is a complete loop. A joined circle. You are only recycling when you are buying recycled. For example, it is a cop-out for Apple to claim as part of the green credentials for their new MacBook Air that its enclosure is “highly recyclable” aluminium.

If they really wanted to make a definitive stand on recycling then all they had to do, as one of our commenters observed, was ensure that it is made from post-consumer recycled drink cans. Or pre-loved laptops.

Consider these stats from Recycle: the Essential Guide. Recycling aluminium saves 95% of the energy, and 95% in carbon dioxide emissions, compared to virgin production. Four tons of bauxite are required to produce one ton of aluminium. Worldwide, the aluminium industry uses as much electric power as the entire continent of Africa. Recycling one aluminium can save enough energy to run a TV for 3 hours or a 100 watt light bulb for 20 hours.

Now it may be that the MacBook Air does contain a percentage of recycled content, but they don’t say. Saying so would lead others to follow suite and the market for recycled aluminium consumer products would expand, as would our efficiency at recovering aluminium before it was buried in landfills.

Companies like Patagonia, Nau, Mountainsmith, Osprey and Voltaic lack the $15 billion that Apple has stashed in the bank. So it might've been easily justified for these businesses to have simply used the ‘highly recyclable’ phrase too, for the polyester in their products. But they didn’t. [And nor did Humanscale, who use 100% recycled aluminium in their line of office products.] These companies went out and sourced recycled materials for their product. They closed the loop. They truly recycled. They showed courage. They said “do as I do.” They led.

Products touting ‘recyclable’ materials are eco-poseurs, unless those materials are also already recycled.

[This is not to decry the other worthy effort that Apple expended, to get the MacBook Air as free as possible of mercury, arsenic and PVC. Credit where due.]

This whole Greener Electronics Guide is bogus. You guys used their FAQ on their site to answer the guide. Did you ever think to e-mail them? Did you ever think to call them?

Here is a link to a good source explaining my thinking better. http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071128-greenpeaces-green-electronics-guide-undermined-by-minimal-research-effort.html

I hope your @&#@!@# get sued by nintendo. (The previous statement was opinion.)

Thank you for the nice article.
Seattle is a wonderful place. Heck, the whole Northwest is cool :-)

We each have that which makes our passions go. Mine is eco-related, and at the moment, solar power dominates my thoughts. Its all about building our civilization so we can leave it to our children better than we had it given to us. I believe, despite the headlines, that we will be ok on that goal :-)

the japanese are being arrogant to hunt whales and eat sharkfin soup. I wish there was an "arrogance tax" :-)

Rene,

Thanks for the heads up I appreciate it.

I don't think I will be buying any toys though as we are empty nesters.

My concern and appreciation is that your baby friend is saving our land fills and aquafer and some containers and fiber but what are you doing to help change peoples mind set as to their attitude of, it's not my problem?

With that as a challange and it totally does not mean a war, how are you going to partake in the "saving of our Planet"?

Hello Renne,

I too care about social entrepreneurship and I am making one of my life's goals to challenge economic injustice. Part of making this fight, especially in being in a high-profile organization, and *especially* in being dedicated, is that we need to address these topics. By not addressing the notion that environmentalists want more regulation because executives are not worth responding to sounds like a gotta-vent-to-feel-good response.

We do need to vent, but we need to come back with logic and practicality. The exec's and CEO's have it boiled down to dollars and cents, but we have a wonderful arsenal in our disposal: science. Remember, we are dealing with people who have an administrative mind-set, we need to speak their language if we're going to cook their goose.

I have a yahoo 360-deg page where I counter Free Enterprise. Economic competition is one thing, but a capitalist practice exploits the worker and the consumer, reducing their interests to nil. Some people would rather live in their own little world and let the rest rot. These people might not ever change. But I would really like to involve myself in changing things. Peace!

In response to: Lead in Toys is So 10 Years Ago

phys431 [Visitor]
It is possible (and practical) to discern if your children's toys are safe. GET THEM TESTED. There are laboratories that are listed in the yellow pages that can perform lead testing. One will want either an XRF (X-Ray Flourescence) testing or FAS (Flame Absorption Spectroscopy) testing. Or you can just tell the lab to test for lead-based paint. The former is ok if the surface of the painted area is FLAT AND larger than a postage stamp. Otherwise it's not practical or possible (or reliable). Otherwise, scrape off the paint (an area the size of a postage stamp) and collect that in a plastic bag. Submit that bag, or the toy if testing by XRF. The cost for either (provided you go to the lab) should be $10-20. The XRF can be done (if they are available) in a couple minutes. The FAS might take some time, so tell them how soon you want results (12 hrs, 24, 48, 72, etc).

If it comes back greater that .06% by weight, your toy is not safe according to the FTC. Now wasn't that a good $10-20 well spent? Save the lab results. Make two copies and send one back to the toy maker and demand a refund. Save the other (and the toy) for the press. A law suit would *not* be productive, just take your refund, toss the toys, and tell your friends to do the same.

As a concerned parent, I'm just not sure how you know what is safe and what isn't. Despite our continuing request for wooden toys only, we often receive plastic toys from well-meaning friends and relatives. The one group of toys we've allowed the kids to keep are the Fisher-Price Little People. The kids just love them. I have tried repeatedly to find out what they are made of keep coming up blank. I even called Fisher-Price and they said they could not reveal that information. Do I have to throw them out? Argghh. Toy manufacturers should be looking out for children and working with parents. Instead they are just looking out for their profits.
