Problems on Adak
Adak is truly beautiful place and I am sure members that have just visited Adak on the "Esperanza" will agree. Like all of the Aleutian Islands, Adak is a volcanic island and the tundra and wildlife make it an awesome place to live. Its sad, though, to say that most people here do not care about Adak's beauty. All the garbage on Adak has to be burned and I guess there really isn't anything else that can be done with it (there are already several landfills left behind by the Navy). The thing that bothers me though is that no one makes any effort to make sure that grabage isn't blown around by the wind. As soon as the trash is dumped, the wind picks it up and spreads it everywhere and no one makes an effort to clean it up and no one it willing to takes actions to make sure that it can't be spread by the wind. Its really sad to see the tundra and beaches littered with garbage.
Another concern of mine is the fact that people here see the island as one gigantic dumping ground. There is so much metal and plastic just sitting and rotting away.....i'd really like to see something done with it all; like a barge comming to pick it all up and take it to a recycling plant.....but that costs money.... something people are very reluctant to spend.
There are so many other problems that do need to be taken care of but I think that those are probably some of the more important ones.

Anyways that why i decided to check out the Greenpeace website. I have been trying to do my part by going around the house adn doing simple things like turning off the water when its not needed and making sure taht lights are off when not needed but I'd really like to do more.
