Everyone is suspect, no one to protect

Check out steelvipers greenpeace blog.

I have responded to his idiotic comment.

I'm not devoting another post to disproving everything he said, if you want to see it, there's a comment on his page.

I'll post the comment I left here too:

You're right, tritium isn't used in fission reactors. How ever, it IS a waste product produced by nuclear reactors. Don't tell me it didn't happen, it was all over my town's newspaper. Oh, and the texas comment was making a refrence to George Bush.

The whole point of that original entry  was not about fusion. It was about FISSION. As we know it, fission reactions create harmful radioactive waste that remains radioactive for thousands of years. That was the point I was making. You obviously have NOT done your research.

If you don't believe there was a tritium leak, look up any recent articles about the nuclear power plant in Braidwood, Illinois.

I have found multiple articles:
http://www.watertechonline.com/News.asp?mode=4&N_ID=60454

And this:
http://www.suntimes.com/output/news/cst-nws-tritium17.html

look at the bottom of the 2nd article.
There you have it. Tritium, a WASTE product of nuclear fission reactions, leaked into the surrounding town's ground water on EIGHT SEPARATE OCCAISIONS.

You clearly have NOT done your research.
Don't tell me I'm wrong. I live here.
I know what happened, I know that there is an elevated risk of cancer in the surrounding area. If the water wasn't safe to drink, then there is a problem. Nuclear power is just not safe, so please, stop trying.

If you truly honestly believe that I'm wrong, then I implore you to come to here, specifically braidwood, and live there for a while. While you're at it, have a couple cups of their local ground water.

----------------------------------------

Yeah so good times.

Anyways.

E85.

It is the future of fuel.

We ARE running out of oil and something needs to be done. I'm sure steelviper disagrees, but that's ok, see, he's one of the people who can't listen to logic. Of course, should we fail to ever switch and then we run out of oil, I'll be able to say "ha, I told you so." That's a really good feeling. So is walking everywhere.

It's strange. I watched a video on ANWR the other day. It was called "Oil On Ice". One quote stuck out in my mind. I forget who said it, but it makes a great point:

"When we're addicted to drugs, we're told to cut off the supply. When we're addicted to oil, we're told to increase it."--The Bald Guy from that Movie I Watched

Something needs to be done. Personally, I suggest switching to E85. It will not only solve our oil problem, it is cleaner (it's made from 85% ethanol as opposed to the current 10%) and we have what we need to make tons of it. Corn. Ethanol comes from corn. Not to mention that it will benefit farmers who America is constantly screwing over.

People tend to argue that it'd be too hard to switch over.

Not true. It's a matter of giving the car some new software. It's really quite simple.

Other's might argue that it could slow the car down, etc. I know people often say that it will slow the car down because we have these hybrids (which are amazing cars) that have a 0-60 of around 15 seconds, much like my corolla. It's actually just the opposite. E85 has a typical octane rating around 105. That's more than premium gas, and the best part is that it costs as much as regular.

There's no reason we aren't switching other than that the oil companies would crumble.

Fusion and Fission

Sorry for the lack of updates.

Ok, some genius (note the sarcasm) decided he'd try to challenge my stance on nuclear energy and he failed miserably.

His comment can be viewed in the previous entry.

See, he's convinced that Fusion is the future of energy, or as he put it on his blog, "Nuclear Salvation".

No.

Bad idea.

This guy has done no research. How do I know this?

Ok, well think about it, as of now, to complete a fusion reaction, it takes MORE energy to produce it than the reaction itself produces.

confusing? A little. Basically, you'd be using more power than the reaction would generate. So when "steelviper" comes out and says that it could "power 1/3 of america forever", he's making a false statement. To say that is blatant ignorance. Hey bud, where do we get the energy to make the reaction happen? Oops, we forgot about that =X

Now for the big one. He comes on and tells me that it's clean. Ok, well see, that entire entry was about FISSION. Not fusion. Fission.

They are the complete opposite. That's like calling a liberal a conservative.

Fusion is the FUSING of two atoms. Two atoms being smashed together.

FISSION is the splitting of two atoms and we KNOW FOR A FACT that the waste created is toxic and that it remains toxic for thousands of years.

Since i've done little research on fussion, I don't know what kind of waste it creates. Until we actually complete a fusion reactor that is efficient, we won't really know what the negatives are.

And really, how safe can it be? We barely know how to contain it. It uses super magnets to contain the reaction right now. What happens if something breaks?

People need to think before they speak.

Response to a comment I received

Ok, here's a comment I've received regarding my beliefs:

"You say in your mini profile that you are against nuclear energy. Are you aware that this technology is MUCH cleaner for the environment and will slow global warming? I just really don't know what you're thinking. Maybe you can explain."

Alright, I will explain. Nuclear energy...is cleaner you say? How is it cleaner? While it doesn't pollute the air in the process of splitting the atom, the left over waste is disasterous for our environment. Now, if you don't mind coming down with radiation poisioning, then that's your issue, I'll let you deal with that, but I myself am trying to not get cancer in any form. Anyways, back on topic. The left over waste is highly radioactive and there is no way to break it down into something usable or harmless. It will remain radioactive years after you are dead. And worse, it's cluttering up the few places we have to store it.

Now, Bush plans to store it underneath some mountains, so on and so forth, ok, bad idea. That's a really awful idea. One earth quake and we could have a nuclear disaster like none other. There's no telling what could happen if millions of gallons of nuclear waste were to seep into the ground. Or what if there's a huge spill. Note that I say "huge" because there's been a bunch of small scale spills. The effects are just now taking effect unfortuneately. Take 3 mile island for instance. The government will tell you that no one was harmed. Wrong, the birth defect rate is much higher in that area than any surrounding area. Coincidence? No. Contrary to what the officials said, radioactive material WAS released and it DID have an effect on the surrounding human population.

People like yourself often think that it's clean. It's not clean. Frankly, if I had to choose, I'd rather be breathing soot black air as opposed to drinking tritium tainted water.

Ok, so you're probably thinking, "so what? An accident like that will never happen." No? In my hometown, we just had an incident. Some tritium was leaked. Naturally, the higher authorities are trying to cover it up. Bad idea. I won't go into why that will screw them over come election time.

Look, I know no one believes some random person off a green peaceblog, but  you've GOT TO STOP LISTENING TO THE GOVERNMENT PREACH ABOUT HOW SAFE IT IS. It's not safe. It never will be.

And get this, as the technology devoted to keeping these death traps safe age, they become increasingly defective. The aging technology was responsible for the recent emission of radioactive material in my community. It's not going to get any younger. More is bound to go wrong.

We need to decomission these time bombs before it's too late. I'll make another post over the weekend that will contain everything everyone ought to know about why nuclear power is a horrible horrible thing.

But first I need to do some more research on it. I know the facts, I need some statistics though. Otherwise, who will be convinced eh?

Global Warming, Viaj's Guide To Stop It

| More
viaj

Ok, It may be too late to stop global warming. Saddening, but I've done the research, it's frightening but true.

Of course, I'd like to believe there's still something we can do to stop it. I can't force anyone to do anything to stop this looming chaos, but hey, I can give suggestions. So here's my guide (I'd normally say it's me "_ _ step guide to: something", but I don't know how long this will go on for) to stopping global warming:

1. Plain and simple. Stop.Driving.SUVs. How many times must people be told? They are bad. I did some thinking today and realized exactly what is wrong with us. People in America are stubborn. We like driving our horrible polluting vehicles. That's what's wrong with us. That's it. I never said I'd tell you how to change, only that I know the problem. It's up to Americans to fix it. Unfortuneately, we probably WON'T fix it. Ever. American's are just too stupid, so stupid in fact, that they're willing to essentially die because of it. But hey, that's the whole "The fittest shall survive thing". And let me tell you this. We are far from mentally fit. Oh, and we're not in the best physical shape either =\

2. Stop brushing it off like it's no big deal. There are people who don't care, in fact, there are those who'd welcome it. Why? They don't like it cold. Oh no. Cold. Dear ficticious god, save us all. The cold. It's not like we haven't endured COLD WEATHER for thousands of years or anything. It's not like we should be used to it. Oh wait, yeah it is. So basically, people don't like it being cold, so they decide to allow the earth to...heat......up.....um...wow. Ok, see, here's the problem. While people don't like it when it's cold, people also don't like it when it's hot. In fact, we can't live if it gets too hot. Uh oh. What happens when it's too late? What happens when it's so hot that you can no longer sustain life? Well, at that point it, everyone will be dead. Oops, can't enjoy the warm weather I guess D=

3. Stop putting it off. "Oh, well...We'll worry about it in a few years." No, worry about it now so that it doesn't become a problem. Wouldn't that make more sense? Why let it do damage if we can prevent it? If you had cancer and you KNEW you had cancer, would you just sit there while it amasses into a problem and say "Oh, it's not a problem YET, so I'll just wait until it's threatening my life and there's a chance I won't make it.", or would you say "OH SHIT, I NEED TO GET THIS FIXED PRONTO." I'd guess the second. So why is it different for this? I mean, in both cases, YOU could die. And neither will be painless. In fact, dying from over heating would probably be much much worse in some cases.

4. Petition your state politicians to propose legislation that would prevent the emission of green house gasses in your state. Up taxes for SUV drivers. Give tax breaks to those who drive environment friendly cars.

5. Buy a hybrid. Get rid of that gas guzzler and start conserving. If you keep putting it off, nothing will ever change.

6. Stop driving sports cars. I know, it's hard, we love luxury, and we love fast cars, but fast cars don't really matter if you aren't alive to drive them. I'm not saying get rid of your corvette. Keep it, but maybe for your next car, opt for a gas saver. Or perhaps buy another cheaper, more fuel efficent car, like a small japanese car. Chances are if you can afford a sports car, you can afford another car. You could also just not drive these cars at all. That'd make the most sense. Let's face it, with the imposed speed limits, what purpose do these cars serve? You aren't a race car drive and guess what, you never will be. Sure, once in a while you have an open road with no cops around, leaving you to gun it. How often does this chance come up? Not often enough to justify the price tags on these cars. Some people are under the influence that cars that aren't SUVs instantly have better gas mileage. Wrong. In most cases, these sports cars get even worse mileage. Think, these cars often have V10 engines in them. That's a ridiculous amount of power for one person. It's time to stop living in the "I'm a racecar drive!" fantasy, and come back to earth.

7. And last, DO SOMETHING YOURSELF. I don't care what it is, just do something. Remember when greenpeace activists chained themselves to the assembly line at a Range Rover plant in the U.K? Do something like that. You don't even have to go to a factory, hit the local intersection and chain up to a person's car. Yeah, someone elses car. Why have anything sympathy for them? Don't worry about damaging their car, THEY'RE damaging YOUR health. If you were in a fight, you wouldn't just sit there letting the other person beat you down would you? No, of course not, that's stupid. So why would you let them pollute your lungs with their toxic SUV emissions? You shouldn't. Go out there and do something. Don't worry about the law, anyone with a brain should see that you're trying to help the environment. It shouldn't be YOU in jail, it should be the politicians who allow the toxic beasts to prowl our streets.

peace.

SUVs in america

| More
viaj

Alright, so I had to write an editorial for something, and I figured, hell, global warming is really messing with planet earth. I blame SUVs for a huge portion of it.

So here's my editorial (I got my facts from: www.suv.org):

---------------------------------------------------

“That’s massive”. No, for once, this line isn’t being used to describe America’s ever growing waste line. Instead, it is being used to describe the ever increasing size of the cars we drive in America, specifically SUVs.

No other car has damaged our environment as badly as SUVs. It’s not just the fact that they spew out 75% more toxins (nitrogen oxides) than most cars, or the fact that they rarely get above 19 mpg; it’s the fact that there are so many. America seems to be obsessed with large objects. SUVs are no exception.

One thing that isn’t large though is our wallets. We’re getting scammed at the pump, and to make it worse, we’re just taking it. Gas prices are at record highs. That’s strange. Gas and oil companies are reporting record profits. You’d think that profits in the hundreds of millions would be enough for anyone, but for some reason, these companies continually get in bed with the Bush administration to ensure that SUVs don’t undergo stricter EPA requirements. Ever wonder why none of the car companies (besides Lexus) has ever tried to improve the MPG of their SUVs? Everyone is teamed up against the consumer. They couldn’t care less about the environment, and they certainly couldn’t care less about you.

SUVs are horrible for the environment. Aside from the fact that they waste gas, they pollute far more than most normal sized cars (like a sedan). They spew out 30% more carbon monoxide and 75% more nitrogen oxides than normal cars. This essentially defeats the purpose of an SUV, which is for them to be driven in places that one cannot drive a normal car, like in the forest. Unfortunately, these poisons increase the planet’s temperature and will result in damage to the forests.
Now, forests are one thing, but most people, even environmentalists, put themselves first. It’s humans above all. It’s sad, but that’s the way it is. So typically, the only way to persuade someone to act on something is to explain how it may just kill them, or make them go broke. In that case, this should be an argument in which 100% of people agree on. SUVs have a huge impact on climate change which in turn has an impact on us. The World Health Organization has estimated that 150,000 people are dying every year from climate change. That is almost as much as the Bosnian genocide (which we also ignored for a while).

People need to understand that we cannot let this stand. People are dying because a group of people made bad decisions in what they drive. It’s as simple as choosing a different car, but this is America, and in America, we don’t like to listen to anyone else’s ideas. Global warming seems like a mythical beast that looms far off in the distance, if we don’t get too close to it, then it won’t hurt us. That’s our train of thought, and it’s wrong. Dead wrong. Global warming is coming to a point where it is irreversible. That’s bad. Really bad.

People tend to think of global warming as something that’s really “not so bad”. It’s the “Who cares if it warms up a little bit? I like it warm” mantra. Now, if it simply got a few degrees warmer and stopped, it wouldn’t be so bad, but that’s not the case. SUVs aren’t going to one day just decide to stop raising the temperature. It’s like winter when you’re sitting inside your house. You decide to light a fire to get warm, but you never sit right next to it, that’d be painful, it’d burn. It’s no different here, except unlike your fireplace, which you can move away from, once global warming takes effect, we don’t get to move away, we get scorched. There’s no second chance.

Gas, a product of oil, is obviously needed in order for us to be able to fuel our cars. When massive cars like SUVs guzzle gas the way they do, we must then find a new source of oil. Unfortunately, this typically means that oil companies must drill in our national parks which often have oil hidden beneath them. When we are forced to drill in these protected areas, everything is destroyed. In fact, not only are all the trees, plants, and animals cleared out, the area becomes a wasteland from the hazardous byproducts that come from the machinery used, the chemicals involved, etc. If we continue on this path, the rate of extinction will increase, as will the human death rate.

We could stop all this. We might even be capable of reversing it. We will never get rid of air pollution, humans are just too stubborn, but we can slow it down. Wiping these horrid machines from the face of the earth would be a huge help to our environment that we depend on and abuse at the same time. We love to be the liberators, the people who bring relief to others, so imagine how we’d feel if we knew that as a country, that we were saving 150,000 people every year. We’d be heroes, and perhaps the world would hate us just a little less. But until then, we’ll be responsible for the preventable killings of 150,000 people per year.

-------------------------------------------------------

 Yeah so that's basically it.
