Response to a comment I received

Ok, here's a comment I've received regarding my beliefs:

"You say in your mini profile that you are against nuclear energy. Are you aware that this technology is MUCH cleaner for the environment and will slow global warming? I just really don't know what you're thinking. Maybe you can explain."

Alright, I will explain. Nuclear energy...is cleaner you say? How is it cleaner? While it doesn't pollute the air in the process of splitting the atom, the left over waste is disasterous for our environment. Now, if you don't mind coming down with radiation poisioning, then that's your issue, I'll let you deal with that, but I myself am trying to not get cancer in any form. Anyways, back on topic. The left over waste is highly radioactive and there is no way to break it down into something usable or harmless. It will remain radioactive years after you are dead. And worse, it's cluttering up the few places we have to store it.

Now, Bush plans to store it underneath some mountains, so on and so forth, ok, bad idea. That's a really awful idea. One earth quake and we could have a nuclear disaster like none other. There's no telling what could happen if millions of gallons of nuclear waste were to seep into the ground. Or what if there's a huge spill. Note that I say "huge" because there's been a bunch of small scale spills. The effects are just now taking effect unfortuneately. Take 3 mile island for instance. The government will tell you that no one was harmed. Wrong, the birth defect rate is much higher in that area than any surrounding area. Coincidence? No. Contrary to what the officials said, radioactive material WAS released and it DID have an effect on the surrounding human population.

People like yourself often think that it's clean. It's not clean. Frankly, if I had to choose, I'd rather be breathing soot black air as opposed to drinking tritium tainted water.

Ok, so you're probably thinking, "so what? An accident like that will never happen." No? In my hometown, we just had an incident. Some tritium was leaked. Naturally, the higher authorities are trying to cover it up. Bad idea. I won't go into why that will screw them over come election time.

Look, I know no one believes some random person off a green peaceblog, but  you've GOT TO STOP LISTENING TO THE GOVERNMENT PREACH ABOUT HOW SAFE IT IS. It's not safe. It never will be.

And get this, as the technology devoted to keeping these death traps safe age, they become increasingly defective. The aging technology was responsible for the recent emission of radioactive material in my community. It's not going to get any younger. More is bound to go wrong.

We need to decomission these time bombs before it's too late. I'll make another post over the weekend that will contain everything everyone ought to know about why nuclear power is a horrible horrible thing.

But first I need to do some more research on it. I know the facts, I need some statistics though. Otherwise, who will be convinced eh?

Sorry but I think you're wrong on the leak in your community. Tritium is only used in hydrogen bombs and nuclear fusion reactors(which havent been officially completed yet, but will be our best source for power in the future), and is safe enough that you don't need protective material to handle it. Plutonium and Uranium are used in fission reactors, which are the current reactors used to produce power.

I wasn't saying that the fission reaction was safe to handle, I was saying the tritium was. lollerskates way to misread my statement.
